Reclaim Your Body and Your Power Through Somatic Therapy for Complex Trauma
NE
If you’ve experienced early or long-term trauma, you’ve likely had moments when talk therapy helped—but didn’t quite reach the deeper layers. Maybe you’ve spent time understanding your past, identifying patterns, and practicing new skills. And yet, something still feels stuck—like your body is holding onto stories your mind can’t fully unwind.
This is a common experience for people living with Complex PTSD (C-PTSD). It’s also where somatic therapy can make a powerful difference.
What Is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach to trauma healing. It recognizes that trauma isn’t just stored in memories or thoughts—it lives in your nervous system. It often shows up as tension, numbness, chronic hypervigilance, or shutdown.
The word “somatic” simply means of the body. In this work, we explore how your body adapted to survive. Instead of jumping straight into the content of your trauma, we focus on creating a foundation of internal safety. That might involve breathwork, body awareness, or noticing subtle sensations without judgment or analysis.
This work is slow, intentional, and rooted in your consent—because your body gets to lead here.
Understanding Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)
C-PTSD usually develops from prolonged or repeated trauma, especially in childhood or within relational systems that lacked safety. This may include:
Emotional neglect or abuse
Growing up in chaotic or unstable environments
Unpredictable or unsafe caregiving relationships
Living in marginalized or oppressed communities
People with C-PTSD often experience:
Emotional flashbacks that arise without a clear trigger
Deep-seated shame or self-blame
Difficulty forming or trusting relationships
Feeling “too much” or “never enough”
Disconnection from their bodies or surroundings
You may know what happened to you, but still feel like you’re stuck in it. Somatic therapy helps untangle the imprint trauma leaves on your body—not just your mind.
How Somatic Therapy Helps with Trauma Recovery
Somatic therapy creates space to reconnect with your body’s innate wisdom and regulation. It’s not about forcing your body to change, but about helping it remember that safety, connection, and choice are possible now.
In session, this might look like:
- Grounding and breathwork
- Tracking sensations with curiosity
- Exploring the physical expressions of emotion
- Movement, posture, or somatic resourcing
- Visualization exercises to connect with supportive internal states
Together, we move at the pace of safety. If something feels too activating, we slow down or shift directions. This isn’t about performance. It’s about presence.
Why Nervous System Healing Matters
Many of my clients say things like:
“I can talk about what happened, but I still feel caught in it.”
“I thought I processed this, but my body still acts like I’m in danger.”
“Sometimes I feel nothing at all—like I check out without meaning to.”
These are all signs that your nervous system is still doing its best to protect you. Somatic therapy offers a new way to relate to your body, one rooted in compassion, connection, and choice—so you’re not just surviving, but actually beginning to trust yourself again.
